Just as the various arts organizations were gearing up to commence the new 2017/2018 season, Hurricane Harvey brought all things to an abrupt halt with devastating rainfall and flooding. Here is a summary of theaters and organizations that have been affected by Harvey:
Wortham Theater Center: Basement is completely flooded; front of house areas received low levels of water penetration; both stage surfaces of Brown Theater and Cullen Theater show damage; Cullen shows low level of water lining dressing room corridor.
Houston Grand Opera (houses out of both Wortham theaters): Instruments and costumes were moved from basement level to higher ground before the storm.
Jones Hall: Significant damage in basement with water still standing.
Houston Symphony (Performance home of Jones Hall): Some equipment damage from Jones Hall basement flooding.
Hobby Center: Water penetration through the foyer’s loading dock area –affecting Zilkha Hall.
Alley Theatre: Basement dressing rooms, Neuhaus Theatre & Mitchell Lobby have been filled with water. Electrical systems for both theaters are currently underwater.
Theater District Parking Garages: Deemed unusable – currently full of floodwater.
